Meetings of the Board of Directors The Ascot Homeowners Association Board met on August 4th at Lars’ house at 7:15 pm. The following board members and homeowners were present – Bob Naftal, Lars Okeson, Mike Lee, Alice Burns, Bill Kelley, and Scott Rackham. Minutes: The minutes from the July meeting were corrected and approved. Treasurer’s Report: One homeowner has not paid this year’s dues; Lars sent a letter to the homeowner to request payment. Common Grounds: Tennis Court – The tennis court is schedule for repairs the week of the 18th of August. The cracks will be cleaned and filled; any lines that are affected by the repairs will be repainted. The weeding of the beds will be done in August. The next bush hogging will be scheduled for October. Ascot Adhoc committee for non-motorized trails: First and foremost the board would like to thank the committee for their hard work and comprehensive report on the possibilities of getting a trail to connect to the Reston trail system. The board hopes that they will continue their efforts. Bill Kelley presented to the board the findings of the committee, serving on the committee are Sounia Chaney, Maura Brandt and Tara Rudenski. Bill explained four possible ways to connect to the Reston trail system. The committee cited many issues in each scenario, giving special attention to the environmental and safety issues. Bruce Wright, the district representative, stated that the current county plan will have a trail all along Route 7 but it may be 10 years before the trail is complete. The committee was looking into the possibility of having some access to Great Falls Crossing so the neighborhood can have easy access to their pool and the Mobil station in addition to the Reston trails. There are four separate trails along Route 7 now but none of them are connected to each other or allow access to the corner of Rt. 7 and 606. The three scenarios presented were - an access at the end of Bishopsgate Way, a creek trail using our common ground behind section 1 and 2, Piney Run trail to access Reston, and the current VDOT plan for a trail on Route 7 when the road is widened to 6 lanes. Each possibility was discussed by the board and homeowners present; exploring the pros and cons of the environment, access to our neighborhood, financial impact and neighbor’s desires. The board suggested to the committee that the best option would to push VDOT to accelerate the path planning from Reston Parkway to Utterback Store Road. The idea being that they will be doing work on that portion of the road already and if we can convince them to go ahead and get the path done then we can be connected to the Reston trails sooner. There will be no environmental impact, no property acquisition, it’s going to happen anyway and the association will not have to commit any funds. By-Laws: The by-laws heading was changed to say “Amended and Restated By-Laws”. If you are interested in serving on the board for the next term please contact a board member. Our next board meeting will be the annual meeting on September 8th at 7:30 at the Grange. The meeting concluded at 9:45 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Alice Burns |
